On Stardate 50984.3, the crew of the U.S.S. Voyager encountered a destroyed armada of Borg ships. Sensor scans showed an alien biomass aboard one disabled cube.
An Away Team comprised of Commander Chakotay, Lt. Tuvok, and Ensign Harry Kim discovered a new telepathic alien race that the Borg called Species 8472. While Kim worked to download the Borg tactical database, he was attacked by one of the aliens. Although the Away Team was rescued, a few stray alien cells from Kim's chest wound infused every system in his body. The alien cells were consuming his body from the inside out.
The EMH used modified Borg nanoprobes to emit the same electrochemical signals tas the alien cells so the probes could destroy the cells without being detecteed. Captain Kathryn Janeway offered the probes to the Borg in exchange for safe passage through their space.
