Let’s Roll! Save The Mission!
It’s
Time to Save Pluto Exploration Once and for All! By Signing Our Petition You Agree: Funding for New Horizons should be appropriate so New Horizons will launch in 2006. A timely launch is crucial since Pluto's orbit is the most elliptical of any of the planets. Having reached its closest approach to the sun in 1989, Pluto warmed enough to develop a thicker than normal atmosphere. Since 1989, Pluto has been on the 140-year outbound leg of its orbit. As it gets farther from the sun, more of its atmosphere will freeze, falling back onto the planet's surface. With no significant atmosphere there to measure, vital scientific data will be lost - at least until Pluto again develops a thicker atmosphere after it thaws again near the year 2200! The time to send a probe is now! Waiting is not the answer; we could lose significant data about the atmosphere of this planet. The New Horizons mission is a cost effective way, under 500 million dollars, of exploring the Solar Systems most distant worlds. New Horizons offers promising science at Pluto and Charon, as well as several Kuiper Belt Objects. It's time to get this mission to the launch pad, the continued procrastination by the folks heading NASA as well as the current administration is unwise. We request Congress again reallocate funding in the FY2003 Budget to allow this mission to happen. We also urge the current administration and the folks at NASA to realize what the public wants, and see that this mission get to the launch pad at Kennedy Space Center. It's time to realize that this mission is what the public wants. This is the kind of mission NASA needs; it will reenergize the public about space exploration, and set us out on an exciting journey, pushing the boundaries of our exploration of the solar system. We support the New Horizons Mission to Pluto and ask funding be allocated for this mission to happen. Signing this petition states that you agree with the above statement, and points discussed throughout the PlutoMission.Com website. This petition will be saved into a file that will be delivered to Congress. The names from the petition will be supplied to NASA to be flown aboard the New Horizons spacecraft. Click
