Faced with a common enemy in Species 8472, Captain Kathryn Janeway reached an agreement to collaborate with the Borg. One drone, designated Seven of Nine, was chosen by the collective to work with Janeway.

After an attack by Species 8472, SEven of Nine and other surviving drones beamed over to Voyager with injured Janeway. When the Borg turned against Janeway's treaty, Commander Chakotay order the drones blown out into the vacuum of space. Seven of Nine was the only survivor.

Research in Voyager's computer banks determined that Seven of  Nine was once Annika Hansen, the daughter of explorers who had left for the Delta Quadrant two decades prior. It soon became apparent that Seven of Nine could not survive cut off from the Collective. Janeway ordered the holographic doctor to begin removing Seven of Nine's Borg implants to save her life. So began a long ordeal to rediscover her humanity, and to resume the life that had once been Annika Hansen's.
