After the destruction of the U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D in a battle with a renegade Klingon Bird-of-Prey at Veridian III, Captain Picard and his senior officers were assigned to the new Sovereign Class Enterprise-D. After a year's shakedown cruise, the Enterprise-E was assigned to exploratory patrol along the Romulan Neutral Zone when the Borg launched a new attack on Earth. Picard was forced to face his darkest nightmares to overcome the trauma he suffered years before when he was assimilated by the Borg. The captain took the Enterprise-E back in time to stop the Borg from assimilating Earth in the 21st Century.

Two years later, Picard was the host for a Federation/Son'a conference when the Enterprise-E received a distress call from an observation team on the Ba'ku homeworld in "the Briar Patch." When Picard learned the true reason for the Federation's presence, he was forced to make the ultimate choice, whether to follow orders, or honor his oath to uphold the Prime Directive.
