Deanna Troi is the daughter of Ian Andrew Troi, a Starfleet officer, and Lwaxana an ambassador for the Betazed government. Half-Betazoid, Deanna is only empathic, not a telepath like full-blooded Betazoids.
Deanna studied psychology at the University of Betazed, where she met and became romantically involced with a young STarfleet lieutenant, William Riker. The romance ended when Riker left to further his career. in Starfleet. In 2364, Troi was assigned as ship's Counselor to the newly launched U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-D under the command of Captain Jean-Luc Picard. The assignment reunited her with Riker, now Picard's executive officer.
After the destruction of the Enterprise-D in 2371, Troi transferred with Picard to the Sovereign Class U.S.S. Enterprise NCC-1701-E, where she still serves as ship's Counselor.
