Since his consturction in 2335 by scientist Noonien Soong on the Omicron Theta colony, Data's existence has been a struggle to comprehend the meaning of humanity. Soong programmed Data to be devoid of emotion after his previous android, Lore, turned dangerously violent.

When Dr. Soon designed an emotion chip decades later, he sent a signal that would recall Data. Unfortunately, Lore also responded to the signal and stole the chip. Data finally recovered the chip, at the terrible cost of destroying his android "brother".

After a year of hesitation, Data installed the chip with the assistance of Chief Engineer, Lieutenant Goerdi LaForge.

When the Borg Queen and her Collective tried to take command of the newly launched Enterprise-E in 2373, she attempted to seduce Data to her cause by appealing to the emotional sensations he felt. Data managed to control those emotions but his exploration of humanity is far from over.
