The 4.5 inch assortment of are the most popular in the Star Trek line. First produced in 1992 is quantities approaching 250,000 pieces for each figure, the line is really slowing down in 1998/1999. Approximate 8,000-16,000 of each figure are produced in 1998. Exclusives only at Target and Toyfare are available in limited quantities in 1999.
The decline of the Star Trek line is caused by many factors, including the end of production for the popular Star Trek: The Next Generation. Most collectors point to the release of limited edition (LE) figures beginning with "Data as seen in Redemption". Popularly known as "Red Data", this figure was available exclusively through JC Penney in 1995 in limited quantities. Many collectors were unable to acquire Red Data, and lost interest in maintaining their Playmates collection. In 1996, Playmates celebrated the 30th anniversary of Star Trek by releasing only 1,701 units of "Picard as seen in Tapestry" and "Yar from Yesterday's Enterprise". Playmates modestly increased the number of "Projections Barclay" to 3,000. These extremely low quantities put these figures out of reach of most collectors, causing many collectors to loose interest.
