1,701 Limited Edition Figures
Asst. 6430

The first truly extremely limited figures were released in very low quantities.  Many collectors point to "Tapestry" Picard as the turning point toward decline for the Playmates Star Trek line.  Hoping to stimulate excitement, Playmates released only 1,701 to "celebrate" the 30th anniversary of Star Trek.   Instead, Playmates lowered the ceiling of complete collectors to a possible 1,701.   Reacting to the outrage of collector, then president of Playmates, Jim Garber, promised no more limited edition figures - a promise that was later broken.  The quantity of Barclay was also boosted to 3,000 in an attempt to placate collectors.

From Playmates point of view, the company was simply hoping to reverse declining interest and sales in the Star Trek line by getting both retailer and collectors excited about something.  Sadly, it just didn't work and many collectors, unable to obtain these very limited figures, simply gave up.

In 1998, Playmates re-issued these three figures in a boxed set

Captain Jean Luc Picard from "Tapestry" (in individual  packaging) is the only figure of the 4.5 inch line that I don't own.  Do you have one to sell?  Email me at kevinc@plinet.com

I have included several figures that were limited in number and hard to find (under 10,000).  By 1999, interest in Star Trek figures had declined that nearly everything was released in limited quanities - and I did not list those here.  I will soon probably reduce this "limited" section to the "1701" series.
