Playmates initially became involved in the 12" Business by planning an Alien 12" Series that was to include the Gorn, Mugato, Salt Vampire, and an Andorian. They also planned a Masterpiece Series which included all of the 5 Major Captains (Pike, Kirk, Picard, Sisko, Janeway). The Alien series never came to be, and most ended up being released in the General Assortments in the years that followed. Out of the Masterpiece Series only Kirk and Picard made it in the Masterpiece packaging, the others were released in General Release Waves, in Series Specfic Packaging. The Masterpiece Packaging was similar to a book, and featured the Figure (with no accessories), and a book detailing the 5 captains, with the image on the front of the book being that of the figure in the box. In 1999 Playmates released a 4 Figure Assortment for Insurrection, followed in 1999 by 4, 5 figure assortments for general release. 1999 also saw 3 exclusives for the 12" line.
